Hunger, Issue 17 - Listen Up!

HUNGER wants you to Listen Up! to the voices that matter.

Issue 17 opens in conversation with River Gallo discussing their film Ponyboi, seeing them make cinematic history as the first intersex actor to play an intersex character on screen. Another person with a message is Brighton-based soul singer Celeste and, for her first cover interview, the rising star discusses the understated but world-changing importance of kindness. Known for bringing a sense of authenticity to his roles in the big and small screen, Stephen Graham delves into issues like imposter syndrome. Rounding off our cover features, journalist Jesse Bernard speaks to writer and hiphop artist Akala about his personal evolution as an artist.

Elsewhere in the issue, The End of the Fucking World’s Jessica Barden speaks about finding the humour in anxiety, opening up to strangers on Instagram and playing the kind of complex female characters who match up to women in real life. Despite her meme-able lyrics, London-based rapper Ashnikko is also tackling the big issues through her music: whether it be living as a sexual assault survivor or encouraging women to attack male entitlement.

In our Art Section, guest-edited by Talk Art podcast hosts Robert Diament and Russel Tovey, we report from Margate’s bustling art scene, exploring the role that art can play in urban regeneration and encouraging community engagement.
